review 1: Bribery, indictment and disbarment, these three words seeped into the Levenworths household and changed the couple to Jen and Will overnight. It seems that being known by the last name is reserved for people in higher status or at least that is what Jen feels. The couple was living a glamorous lifestyle, the husband a young successful judge and the wife attempting to fit in among the other spouses when the charges made headlines. The only way out is to resign. As words spreads throughout the community about the indictment, their “friends” and connections start to unravel, it’s a time to see who their real friends were and who was there just for show. As a judge, Jen didn’t really know her husband, he was committed to his work and she was trying to keep up the... more image, their marriage was just there. Jen reluctantly hung out with the other wives creating a fundraiser which was immediately torn from her fingers after her friends heard about the charges, things were going in a downward spiral. Never really feeling connected to any females and now friendless, she realizes she is alone and she calls up her sister who lives a few minutes away. It doesn’t take much to reunite the ties, just the willingness and the time which Jen finally realizes is important. The relationship between Jen and Will changed dramatically now that he’s no longer sitting on the bench, it’s no longer superficial and they are no longer two individuals passing in the wind, there is a depth and a connection being recreated. There’s another twist to the book as Jen begins having these livid dreams about the individuals in her life, which start to get pretty intense. Upon awaking she realizes her dreams are true but she doesn’t share them, they become her secrets. As the character’s lives are shattered and they rebuilt them, the author shows us what life is really all about. There’s drama of course, there’s families falling apart, people are fine with what they have and others are trying to hold onto a piece of their life. I was glued to the pages and then the ending came along, totally unexpected but it was all good. This book had a lot of insight into what really matters in life. It addresses the issues of how complicated life can get if you let it, like your job, your attitude, your family or anything else that narrows your vision in life. How these things can transform you and push you into a life where you are not actually living your life but just existing, not breathing but just gasping for breath, not enjoying life but just copping with what life throws out at you. For anyone, it doesn’t have to be a tragic event like what happened to Will and Jen to wake yourself up to such realities, so step back, reexamine your life and your own priorities before it is too late. Life is too short not to enjoy it.
review 2: I really liked this simple, sweet, gentle book. There were many characters and relationships that I really could relate to. Don't think that it will be listed among any literary giants, but I found it very pleasing in its portrayal of real human weakness' and misconceptions. Interesting viewpoints in the way the story unfolded. I enjoyed the lack of intimate sexual detail or violence. Just a nice read. less
