review 1: This is the most stunningly gorgeous book of photographs of tribal people I have ever seen. The tribal people are beautifully staged in their native dress and the photos are unsurpassed. This will be a testament for future generations of how many of these people are living and dressing today before they are assimilated into the modern society and dressing in Western clothing, after giving up their traditional way of life and nomadic existence. The book is expensive, but such lavish photos on high quality heavy paper with backdrops of pristine landscape and with summaries in three languages of their origins, lifestyle, religions and diets. Having visited many of the tribes my only regret was that he had no photos of the Asmat tribe in West Papua which are seldom visited, is... moreolated from the travel circuit and very interesting, and only one photo of the Korowai people. Lots of wonderful photos of the Dani people which are probably the most photographed in that country.Very highly recommended for anyone interested in anthropology, tribal people and their traditions and amazing human photography. Very large book weighing 12 pounds with photos of 20 remote tribes.
review 2: The quality of the photographs is stunning - easily 5 stars. What I feel a bit ambivalent about is the scanty and seemingly rather romanticized text that accompanies them. I wish some of the individuals he photographed had been allowed to speak for themselves - what might they want us to know about their lives and futures? What aspects of their culture might they consider most important to tell us about? I'd also have loved names rather than anonymous portraits. It felt quite different from Peter Menzel's work, which leaves you feeling like you got to know individual people in another culture in a way that gives you some insight into who they are. less
