review 1: This book….oohhhhhhh….this book. It had my heart racing, my brain scrambling, and my butt bouncing on the edge of my chair. It was *singing* faaaaabullllous!! The plot is fan-FRIGGING-tastic!! It’s dark and rich and unique. It’s deep! I think my brain was doing backflips the entire time I was reading this book! OMW! It was so fascinating! The setting was rich. There was obviously a lot of research done, but J.K. Hogan didn’t feel the need to overburden the reader with clumps of data. She expertly wove it in with this amazingly brilliant plot! So. Why didn’t Fire on the Island recieve five dragons, you ask?Characterization.*head desk*I…connected with two characters, Isla and Jeremiah on an intellectual level. Somehow, the emotional level just wasn’t there for ... moreme, so when the two of them started their swirl into romance, I…missed that boat. I don’t know what it was. I don’t think it was missing emotional transitions. I don’t. All of the actions made sense to me, so it wasn’t as if they were acting irrationally – aside from the falling in love part. Maybe it was me. I mean, the Holidays are over and now I’m under the stress of deadlines. ACK!!! I don’t know. The emotional connection just wasn’t there for me.But. This. Plot. Was. AMAZING!!!!!! Normally, when I don’t connect with the characters, I close the book. The end. But this time, the plot literally carried me away! It was awesome! So! I say, Ms. Hogan, job well done! I wish I could put my finger on why I didn’t connect with your characters to help you out, but I just can’t. However…woman! You and that frelling plot! My WORD! Whew!
review 2: I won this book on First Reads! Woo! (First one I've ever won xD). I enjoyed this book. I like it's story. The action I felt was well balanced. Some books, I feel, tend to drag on in order to prolong the "what's going to happen?!" moment. This book I felt was perfect in talking about what was going to happen and then it happened. I really liked the characters. I liked the supernatural world her characters became a part of. I look forward to more books in this series and seeing these characters again. :) less
