review 1: This has some promise, but it is sloppy, poorly written, with strange dialogue that's hard to follow.Jenna's in high school, bullied by an ex boyfriend supposedly because she wouldn't sleep with him, but we learn that there's more to it than that. She falls for Rex, the ex boyfriend's cousin. But given the bullying she doesn't know who to trust anymore. Secrets are revealed, strangely, no one is reasonable and Jenna's life is hell. The emotions were strong in this book, which bumped it from 1 to 2 stars for me.If you want trashy HS drama, read the Fallen Crest High series.
review 2: I want to start my review off by saying BULLYING is real & it hurts people in ways unimaginable. J.L.Beck wrote this story as beautiful as you can write a story about bullying. She
... moretook something that is happening daily and forced us to acknowledge it. A PHOENIX is a long-lived bird that is cyclically regenerated or reborn that obtains new life by arising from the ashes of its predecessor. Jenna, you are my PHOENIX! The strength that she had to have in order to endure everything she went through is amazing. With the weight of the world on her shoulders she still managed to brush everything off and keep moving. This is one strong female character who does not easily cave or give in to her tormentors. Even tho this novella tackles a very serious subject, it does more than educate us, it gives us a story of two people falling in love. A friendship will be tested as well as a budding relationship, all while Jenna learns a secret that threatens to destroy her family. Between her inner dialogue and her best friend Mimi, I could not stop laughing. I was either smiling or giggling off some snarky comment that Mimi made! I freaking love her just as much as I loved Jenna. If an author can make me fall in love with their secondary characters without letting them outshine the main characters well then, they already have my full attention! Rex was this protective, hot, beautiful human being who could sweet talk basically anyone. So when Jenna collided with him she had no chance at resisting him, NO CHANCE! The connection between Jenna and Rex immediately became the focal point of the story for me. They had a spark and you couldn’t help but fall in love with watching them fall together. Corey freaking A, you bastard! I disliked him so much but I couldn’t find it in me to hate him! I saw the hurt inside of him that he battled constantly and I just wanted to give him a big squishy hug AFTER I punched him in his FREAKING throat for being a twatwaffle (YES, guys can be twatwaffles too!) To the mini twatwaffle and Tits McGee, I have some cunt punches waiting for you so be very careful what alley way you come out of! I really liked this story and I am extremely excited to devour the next book in this series! Through her writing I was able to feel a lot of the emotions that the characters felt and I honestly can not wait to experience it again! less
