review 1: I loved this book. The humour it has throughout is amazing and I caught myself sometimes having to hold back my laughter while I was reading on public transport. At times this was not possible because it was just too hilarious! It does not matter if you have not read the first book in the series (Alle Toten fliegen hoch: Amerika), I have not yet done that either. It is somewhat included in the book in one chapter, but apart from spoiling one detail of the first book it should not be that important. It has to be said though that now I want to read the first book and cannot wait for the next. The last part of the book describes the experience of death and illness very well and depicts the weird normality it takes on. It also shows that even though there is suffering, this su... moreffering can lead to unknown joy aswell. This is what in the end made the book deserve five stars as a rating. The mixture of laughter and thoughts provoked by the novel is amazing.
review 2: Dieses neue Buch von J.M. hat mir ein bisschen besser gefallen als "Alle Toten fliegen hoch". Seine beiden Bücher sind aus einem "Erzähl-Projekt" des Wiener Burg-Theaters entstanden, wenn ich mich nicht irre. Ich bin sicher, J.M. ist ein wunderbarer Erzähler. Sprechen und schreiben - hören und lesen - sind aber ganz unterschiedliche Dinge (ich hatte jetzt geschrieben "inge", ist auch gut). Gerade beim autobiographischen Erzählen habe ich oft erlebt, dass jemand sehr spannend im Radio oder im Fernsehen über sein Leben erzählt, das nachfolgende Buch aber etwas (oder sehr) langweilt. Beispiele: Martha Feuchtwanger "Mein Leben" Massaquoi "Neger, Neger, Schornsteinfeger....J.M.'s anekdotischer Erzählstil hat mich genervt, wenn zum x-ten Mal die "Verrückten" vorgeführt werden, die auf dem Gelände der psychiatrischen Klinik leben. (Sein Vater ist der Direktor dieser Klinik). Die Anekdoten passten, wenn es um seinen Vater ging. Momente der Erinnerung. Ich glaube, dass wir uns so an Menschen erinnern. Anekdotenhaft. In einzelnen, widersprüchlichen Bildern und Geschichten. Also: Kann man lesen und hat mir oft gefallen. less
