Mail-Order Brides
review 1: 3.7 Stars. Public Library 11/23/14. This story turned out to be quite the adventure. Hetty has been separated by her family but is rescued by a mail-order-bride and her traveling companions. When disaster strikes again Hetty ends up replacing the mail-order-bride to protect two children she met along the way. Poor Karl has no idea what he is in store for with his new hodgepodge family. As they travel out west the truth of Hetty's deceptions come to light put now they need each other to survive. Misbehaving children, logging accidents, bear and other wildlife is just the tip of the iceberg. The ending is a little abrupt but if the series includes these characters in other books I can over look it. A major issue I had with the book was ages of the kids, Hetty, and Karl. They... more were either too old or too young to match up. Grace gets a doll for Christmas and then engaged? I know ppl married young back then but it was a little creepy to give the girl a doll then talk about how she'd be having babies of her own. The other issue I had was the emotional bond btw Hetty and Karl. It's damaged bc of Hetty's deceptions but it's never really built back up from Karl's POV one moment they aren't ok and then they are. It's a good book but nothing deep. It's good for a nice adventurous afternoon read.
review 2: I received this book as part of a Goodreads giveaway. I have not read any of the other Bitter Creek novels in this series, so I was reading it as a stand alone, which totally worked. I can't wait to get to a store & get the balance of these novels! It was a fantastic read! The characters were fantastic. It was a new setting for me, the start of the lumber industry out West, so that also made the book more interesting to read. I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone who likes historical fiction in a heartbeat! less
