review 1: Gave it a go because it was the memoir of the month in one of my groups. Not my thing -- it's written as one-liner after one-liner in the guise of diary entries, and while as standup comedy the repetition and the offensive stuff would come off differently (it's clear that the most awful stuff is simply there to garner a "shocked" reaction from the reader), it reads as offensive and clunky. I don't recommend it.
review 2: There are (or were) quite a few older comediennes past seventy who are still famous and Joan Rivers kind of seems like their leader. I've never read anything by her before, but am familiar with her fashion police show. I wonder what she was like behind the camera? Did she work like all the time? She sounded really smart, even if some of her
... more jokes were not my style. I felt like I shouldn't be enjoying it, but some of her jokes were really well written I couldn't help but enjoy it. It must be really hard to be in competition with other comedy writers when you're well past the age of retirement and she sounds at the top of her game. I always kind of groan when I see her on the E! network, but I guess that's part of her act too. less
