Peterborough band: Children of the Revolution

“As a frontman I like big sing along chorus’ that get the crowd involved, so something like ‘Go Your Own Way’ but I also love the messing about we do in the Burning Love medley”

Children of the Revolution, are a band from Peterborough. They play music from the 60s to present day and they always attract a large variety of people. The band consists of the artists Rob Bull (Lead singer), Kevin Bull (Lead guitarist), Dave Smith (Drums) and sometimes Tom Clarke (Bass.)

The band started out as just something fun to do when they were teenagers and discovering what type of music style they like and learning the types of instruments that they would rather play. It was something that happened organically from the number of gigs they played. The better gigs started going their way and it became a full-time job to them. The inspiration for them was and still is to see how far they could take their band. They are now always striving to be the best that they can be, day in, day out.

They genuinely play around the Peterborough area in pubs and other venues. However, they do have gigs around the country such as Scotland, Newcastle and Cornwall. They are now venturing out of the country and possibly going to play a gig in Portugal.

Having performed music for a number of years, the band has had a number of inspirations and people they wish they could perform with. These have all impacted how the band performs and the type of music that they perform.

After speaking to the band about their influences, they said, “I got into music through bands like Guns n’ Roses and Aerosmith who I still love listening to. Kev would state Guns also and massively Avenged Sevenfold as influences. For Dave, take your pick, Beatles, Bowie, Pink Floyd, Queen, Elton John”

The band for Rob has been going now for almost 17 years, although there has been numerous line ups and members over that time. Dave joined around 10 years ago, and Kevin around 8 years ago. So overall about 8 years.

Besides their schedule of performing they do all have day jobs, Robs day job is running the band as well as other projects they have in the wedding and function industry. He also has a break from the music industry as he owns a small gym, this is where he teaches boxing and fitness! Dave is a full-time guitar tutor as well as being in his other band Austin Gold. Kev is UK Director of Sales for Abax, he’s been with them since there was just three people working, now they have almost a hundred staff and operate out of the Peterborough United Football Stadium.

They only rehearse maybe twice a year, which always sounds a bit crazy! But they make up for this because they gig together usually 3-4 times a week, and always over 120 times a year, so they get loads of practice overall! Finding time for rehearsals for them really difficult because all of their weekends are usually taken up by gigs, so they have to fit other work around our gigs.

They always try and get new songs in prior to the busy summer period, and they sometimes take an acoustic guitar with them when we know we will have some downtime before a gig to try something new out then. This doesn’t stop them entertaining crowds and performing at their best!

Not everything always goes right when performing at gigs, band member Rob said, “We had one of the final slots at the Willow Festival in Peterborough, there was probably over a thousand people in the tent watching us, second song in the whole festival generator and power went down, it took half an hour to get it back up and running.”

The band has a lot of different plans for the future. Rob wants to take the band to Las Vegas and try out their music and perform in America. Other than that, they plan to keep working hard locally, increasing the fan base.

Anyone wanting to get into music, this is what the band had to say, “Music even at the highest levels, even way above what we do, is a very small close group, getting yourself out there well-rehearsed with good gear will open up doors.”

“It’s an old cliché but practice early on really is the key, learn you instruments and get yourself in a band then get playing. I think back to our early gigs years ago, they must’ve been some pretty bad performances but we learnt so much and they were great fun.”

The band will be playing at the Lime Tree in Peterborough on New Year’s Eve! Tickets are £10 (Food included) and will be available at the bar to buy. This will be Rob’s final performance with the band until March. So make sure you get tickets and go see them!
