review 1: Cute. No more, no less. Some cute lessons about the hidden struggles that everybody goes through, whether you know it or not. Some more cute stuff about friendship, and some other cute stuff about stuff. Kind of reminds me of high school musical in that it's like a slightly sanitized version of its school. Even though there is drinking involved. It still feels very much like a kid in the summer between 8th and 9th grade to me
review 2: Perhaps a younger me would have been more enchanted by this formulaic coming of age story. ... moreturns out to have problems of his own, the male best friend who will undoubtedly fulfill the male best friend role. The book is peppered with anthropology notes and they started out witty and funny but got more annoying as the book progressed because I felt like it hindered the flow of the book. Overall though, I found Janice to be an endearing character, but her sudden change in mindset was quite unbelievable. less
