review 1: Buzzwords: Anthropology, coming of age, high school, friendship, crushes, secrets, understanding cliques/social groups, southern pageantJanice Wills is a teenaged anthropologist, observing the culture and behaviors of high schoolers in her small southern town. But is she really as removed as an anthropologist should be? Or is she using anthropology as an excuse to avoid having to engage?Cute, short readCleanreaders: Underage drinking, some kissing, promiscuous/mean behavior by some mean girls
review 2: Cute young adult novel with a definite Mean Girls/Liz Lemon vibe to it. The smart, nerdy North Carolina teen protagonist, (but don't get her started on role playing games and former homeschoolers,) hides her awkwardness behind a facade of would be anthropologist.
... more A quick Internet search showed me that yes, there really is such a thing as Livermush, that the author was working on her medical degree while writing this novel, and that an essay she published a couple of years before "The Rites and Wrongs of Janice Wills" addressed the downside of Googling prospective dates, with consequences much like Janice experienced. I really enjoyed the audio edition and will look for other talking books read by Emily Janice Card. less
