review 1: This was the first Joanna Trollope novel I read and I really enjoyed it. The portrayal of family and family loyalties and the subtle shifts and changes in these loyalties as the characters grow up and form families of their own. I think the matriarch at the centre of the narrative is both overbearing, controlling yet vulnerable. The female characters are central and perhaps if I have any criticism of the novel it's perhaps the one dimensional nature of the male characters-perhaps this is intentional but it is somewhat disappointing.
