review 1: This was the first Joanna Trollope novel I read and I really enjoyed it. The portrayal of family and family loyalties and the subtle shifts and changes in these loyalties as the characters grow up and form families of their own. I think the matriarch at the centre of the narrative is both overbearing, controlling yet vulnerable. The female characters are central and perhaps if I have any criticism of the novel it's perhaps the one dimensional nature of the male characters-perhaps this is intentional but it is somewhat disappointing.
review 2: I'm not sure I really got into this book. I found the characters quite hard to relate to and if I'm honest I wasn't really fond of any of them. I took longer to read this and get into this book than I normally do and I was... moren't really sorry when it finished.I think I will try something else by this Author because I have heard so many good things. Maybe this just wasn't my cup of tea. less
