review 1: Whatever unintelligent souls read this novel and hated it/ strongly disliked it must be out of their minds. I mean there has to be a logical explanation. Maybe they just didn't understand the pure and lyrical writing style or the meaning behind it all or maybe they couldn't get their head around the fact that it is about nothing but at the same time is about everything. Joanne has this poetical and beautiful way of writing in About A Girl that made me read and re read it again and again. The end is my favourite, I still remember the last sentences. And the quirkily named teapot is such a gorgeous idea. And the vibrant young love and happy days and gloomy days and banana cake. It's the best piece of literature I have ever come across. I truly love this book and I will alway... mores treasure it.
review 2: About a Girl was shortlisted as a book of the year for young adult readers. While I think it is a great book, with a gripping story line and emotive language I think that (being 13 years old) it would be for older readers. I was listed as junior judge and that is how I came across this book. I think the best part of this book is feeling Anne's unyielding love for Flynn yourself and feeling her emotion. Joanne Horniman shows great understanding of what it is to be a writer and how to make the book reach out and pull you in. Although, I think the cover of the book is misleading. It suggests a book for, maybe, 12 years and over. As I stated before this is not the case. All in all "About a Girl" is a great book although it is for an older audience then what the cover conveys. less
