review 1: This zero issue of the Lady Mechanika series was available for free download on Comixology. The appealing cover and promise of steampunk sold me. The author explains in the back how con steampunkers led him to try out writing a story in that world. Consequently, the steampunk aspect so far is primarily conveyed through the character costumes (which are brilliant). If not for the clothes and antique weapons, this could be any sci-fi cyborg story, easily taking place in any number of time periods or settings. With that said, I still enjoyed the introduction to Lady Mechanika who is on a quest to find her origin while wearing fabulous corsets and harnesses. Also, the end has cutesy "steampunk" recipes which seem like a very Gail Carriger touch.
review 2: I a
... morem generally not a big fan of most comics but this caught my attention from the beginning. The artwork is amazing and I love how there's a Steampunk theme to the comic which is one of my favorite genres to read about. It is a really short issue about the world of Lady Mechanika but also interesting. She learns that she's not the only one that's been altered but alas isn't able to find out much information before tragedy happens. I loved the fact that she kicked someone's butt for attempting to get power hungry and then confidently sauntered off to pay her respects to someone who met an untimely death. Looking forward to reading the rest in this series! less
