review 1: As a hardcore fan of Metallica, it would have been hard for me to not like this book in some way, shape or form. But Joel McIver has written a page turner, making it extra easy to love this book. Cliff Burton's life was short but full, and the things he accomplished are things that have taken lesser men entire lifespans. Two things kind of annoyed me about this book:Firstly, McIver's inactive style of writing (parts of the book reads like a interview with persons about events long since passed) isn't very inspiring. But if you've sufficiently interested in the subject, this is is forgiveable. McIver should read David Kushner's "Masters of Doom" for an example of how to write a good biography from a literary point of view.Secondly, McIver treats parts of the book like a rant ... moreabout the way he percieves Metallica's new music. Not cool man!
review 2: I first heard of Metallica in 1989 as a teenager, when their first video 'One' came out and almost instantly became a fan! However I didn't know or hear about Cliff Burton until one day in 1990 I was at a friend's house who also liked Metallica and knew a lot more about them and their music. He was the first person to tell me about Cliff Burton and what happened to him. After that I started getting their older albums and then the black album came out and BOOM! They exploded ever bigger. But I was always a fan of the older (Cliff Burton) era. And he became someone that I looked up too in many different ways. His playing and style is unique and legendary and made some of the best and wildest sounds in heavy metal music. The book talks a lot about Cliff's life and who he was and how he became who he was. It is not just about heavy metal but about Cliff's life and the people who surrounded him. I am a self published author of four books, and if I could I would love to be the one who wrote the screenplay for the movie of Metallica; mostly focusing on the their early years mostly with Cliff. Maybe someday! Because I want people and not just fans to see how one of the biggest recording acts made it to who they are now but most importantly about who Cliff really was and how he lived and how his death impacted so many like myself. less
