review 1: This book was good. But I don't think it's very memorable. The middle class descendants of a wealthy landowner open their Irish castle to the public while moving to a cottage on the property. After a tragic accident everything falls apart. All the characters were well drawn, I'm just not sure how interesting they were. It was a fascinating circumstance, but it was a slight book and I'm not sure we were really given enough time to dig in deep. It was a good book but my difficulty in reviewing it is probably telling.
review 2: Rather a sad story. Through a change of times and mismanagement of finances, a family loses their ancestral home and a part of themselves. Very reminiscent of the American South"s loss of the gentile plantation life style. Kate, like mos... moret youth,will embrace her new life, while John will be stuck in the past and never truly live in the present. Poor Marianne will try to fit into both worlds, unsuccessfully. I would have liked to have seen the book end on an up note, but it wouldn't be keeping with the story or characters. less
