review 1: Cute. This is something I want to hand to my stepson; a portrayal of British schoolkids that is witty and sharp and subtle… subtle enough and complex enough that I have no qualms about its perspectives in handing to at 10-year-old, and yet still engaging enough that I as an adult am still entertained. I'm not really its intended audience, but it was still enjoyable, though it's no Courtney Crumrin. I enjoyed its matter of fact approach to fantasy, more in the vein of magical realism. The existence of the likho, and the fact that it is taken as just another part of reality, while standing alongside the matter-of-fact treatment of bullying and very real-world problems of pre-teens is an intriguing and satisfying take on growing up.
review 2: How I love Bad
... moreMachinery! Odd little mysteries with some odd, but very realistic, young characters. I haven't read any of John Allison's other series but I follow these adventures with interest. The girls for me are the strongest characters: sometimes it's harder to get a sense of the boys' personalities (Linton, especially). The girls are so perfect, though, clever and funny and flawed like real kids. Lottie will forever have all my love, but Shauna and Mildred are pretty great, too. Looking forward to more. less
