review 1: The book was good until about page 185. Then enter the legal Mumbojumbo as others have mentioned. I found it ironic that Barylick spoke of the greed of industries to protect their names and products yet nothing of the greedy trial lawyers flocking to the case. It was especially disturbing how he justifies naming big companies in the lawsuit just to get extra money. I am not against compensation for this tragedy. The families deserve all they can get. I just don't like the method of trial lawyers in going after the deep pockets of corporations and companies that are barely associated.
review 2: This was a very engrossing book Barylick does a very good job of balancing the personal stories of the victims and their families with the human and technical causes of ... morethe fire. I found myself fascinated by the vagaries of plastics marketing and flammability tests. Even the "legal chapter", usually the downfall of this sort of disaster book was a very good read. Even if I found myself shouting at the author from time to time; despite NOT being a lobbyist for the insurance industry I disagree with him fairly strongly when it comes to tort law and the need for reform. Still, he does a good job of explaining the current state of the law and detailing the actions the plaintiff attorneys took. This book should be a must-read for anyone owning or running an entertainment venue, and for the safety inspectors responsible to the public for keeping such a tragedy from happening again. less
