review 1: I picked this up, as most have, in response to seeing it as a favorite of Warren Buffet and Bill Gates. I found it to be an incredibly enjoyable read. A very monotone, stream of conscious writing style, yet still quite interesting and engaging. I think people looking for a "how to" book are in the wrong place here. It is, as the title suggests, just a conglomeration of stories of different "business adventures." A very enjoyable read for a change of pace in the business section. Note, some of the stories are much more engaging than others... which can be quite a drag. Enjoy the good ones.
review 2: This is a story from the end of the 1960s describing 12 interesting business and economical events from the near past. Most of the stories come from Wall Street, mo
... morest come from the mid 1960s.Reading this 50 years after the events, some things are scarily similar to today.Interesting quotes from the book include:"All the evidence suggests that communication between people by whatever means, from from simply accomplishing its purpose, invariably breeds the need for more". Who can deny that after the Internet and mobile phone?"... pictured the library of the future as a sort of monster computer capable of storing and retrieving the contents of books electronically and xerographically" - Hey Wikipedia! And Internet! And ebooks! This was from a discussion about xeroxing (copying papers, using technology developed by Xerox) whole books instead of buying them."The danger of ingenious hardware is that it distracts attention from education. What good is a wonderful machine if you don't know what to put on it?" - Still about Xerox' copying machines but applying equally well to TV eduction of the 70s or purchase of computers and tablets in the decades following it. Educators seem to be at a loss on how to make use of technology today, but so they were 50 years ago as well.Other things that are similar is how people that play around with huge sums so easily lose control.I'd like to give it a higher grade than 3/5 but since it is getting a bit dated, a lot of it feels less interesting today. The Piggly Wiggly story was amusing though, and interesting in how the founder first invented the modern super market, and then failed to invent the automatic shop, though self scanning devices of today (70 years later I believe) come close. less
