review 1: I recieved the book to read from Goodreads and found it an easy read. I'm not a die hard sports fan but found the book very interesting and the story kept my attention. It was a learning experiece to see just what the coaches go through and how much time and effort is put into the job! You will find out just how much investment a Coach has in a player along the journey from reading this book. I always did wonder what insiders thought about 'the money' and the 'contracts' and so on. As the Author said, a US Senator said to him, "Do you realize you're creating more millionaires than a Wall Street firm?" One thing for sure, according to the book is this, it doesn't happen overnight! Insightful read on the insides of Coaching. Surprisinly enough, I did recognize many ... moreof the players mentioned in the book! I enjoyed the book, and the story behind it, more than I thought I would! Now, I will pass it on to a neighbor in high school, and may very well be taking this path.
review 2: I won this book through Goodreads First Read program.One of the first books I read as a kid growing up in the 70's was "They Call Me Coach" by John Wooden. In that book, Wooden covers the years he coached the college basketball powerhouse UCLA who won 11 NCAA championships. This book by John Calipari who is currently the coach at Kentucky and was previously the coach of Massachusetts and Memphis is like Wooden's book on ego steroids. Coach Cal is a great coach and he makes sure you know that in reading his book.I did enjoy how he brought out his faith and that he attends Mass daily. He also has some good ideas for changing the NCAA should make for student athletes. Some I agree with and some not so much but still thought provoking. less
