review 1: A moving and powerful story of survival in a 1960s English household where mental illness, sexual abuse, violence and abject poverty are a part of every-day life. The story describes how a young boy, his siblings, parents and community cope with a home life situation which is at once bizarre and horrific yet it shows how the human spirit can thrive in the shadows of tragedy. This book brought me to tears.
review 2: Very different than I expected. These ghosts are family ghosts, not literal ones. An interesting study on paranoid schizophrenia--also amazing how much this boy endured as a child.
