review 1: This is an excellent book for investigating the events of the 1965 "coup" and "counter-coup" in Indonesia. The term "coup" here is actually misused, as neither side attempted to remove the head of state (Sukarno) at that particular time. Instead, I would regard this as a botched purge of powerful political opponents within the military.The author does an excellent job of compiling facts and giving a detailed context of the events leading up to the attempted purge. Using the evidence that he has compiled, he theorizes (successfully in my opinion), on the motives and some of the operational details of the events of October 1st, 1965. He takes on what I think is the most puzzling question regarding the September 30th plotters; what were they thinking ?The author does a fairly... more good job of stitching together his evidence and his theories, while trying to look past the "official" explanation that is put forth by the Indonesian government.

Ditulis dengan analisis yang tidak main-main dan penceritaan yang renyah, membuat pembaca seolah-olah berhadapan dengan novel detektif saja.Buku sejarah memang tidak asing dengan komentar-komentar penulisnya tentang tokoh-tokoh dan peristiwa dalam sejarah. Dan komentar-komentar Roosa lumayan mengocok perut: sarkastis sekaligus lucu, mengeritik tajam dan juga jujur.
