I think I’m in love with B.J. Novak. No, I haven’t met him before, and no, he doesn’t know I exist. But still. I’m definitely in love with B.J. Novak.
Some may think that my adoration is a reaction to his role as Ryan in the U.S. version of The Office (you know, the guy who started the fire).
But no, I have fallen in deep mushy-gushy love because of his 2014 book, One More Thing: Stories and other Stories.
Now, I’m not one for short stories, but I guess it was the opposites-attract thing that pulled me to it. It is just so damn funny. High-brow funny, as in, you need to be “on” to read it. Skimming is not allowed, and every word demands to be contemplated, chewed through and carefully swallowed to appreciate all the yummy layers of both simplicity and complexity that shape up each story.
So really, it is a book for everyone.
The stories itself are a mix of length, tone and intensity. Some are just goofy, and others deep in the fragility of human behavior. Only a class-act people-watcher with a mastery of words could have been able to naturally piece together such a diverse grouping of works result in a uniformity that can only be described with a smile on the reader’s face.
B.J. Novak already proved himself as an actor/writer/producer of The Office. Now, he is just taking victory laps around the track, circling past the losers.
I am so glad I bought this book. I am so honored that I can claim it as part of my collection. I can’t wait to recommend it to others.
In sum, I am in love with B.J. Novak. You will be too; I don’t mind sharing.
Also… I don’t know about you, but I didn’t know that B.J. was an abbreviation. It stands for Benjamin Joseph.
That means…
Benjamin Joseph?
