review 1: I am not sure why I did not like this book more, especially since some of my GR friends gave it 4 stars (Dan S., Kemper, James T.), but I didn't. Jimmy Veeder returns home to the Imperial Valley, on the U.S. Mexico border when news of his father's impending death from cancer finally reaches him. He reconnects with his long ago abandoned friends, helps his Dad with belly laughs and connecting with the mysterious Yolanda, before finding himself in a world of trouble in connection with the latter. I want to read Johnny Shaw's Big Maria.
review 2: Jimmy Veeder returns to his home in the Imperial Valley of Southern California to deal with his father's terminal illness. Much craziness ensues with his friend Bobby and all the other crazy characters from his childh... moreood. Jimmy deals with this father's death and discovers things about his Dad that he didn't ever know. There is also a big plot line involving a friend who is now a Mexican criminal mastermind. Great story with many laugh out loud sections. Jimmy and Bobby pretty much can find trouble anywhere they go and make a spectacle getting out of it. less
