review 1: I would have liked this better if I hadn't already read Dove Season and Plaster City. I thought those were great. This one had some great parts and the situations and characters were good, but somehow didn't come off as well for me. There was more telling what people thought than and explaining how they felt. I thought this must be his first book but he actually wrote Dove Season first. The only thing I can think of is that if I recall, Dove Season and Plaster City were in the first person and this one was in the third. That might account for why the other two came across as much more natural. But if he writes another book, I'll read it.
review 2: What a story!! What a cast of character!! This is one wild story, told with great writing. This book is right up ... morethere with Harry Crews and Kem Nunn for great storytelling and exquisite writing. I'll even go so far as to say it is in the realm of McMurtry in his Lonesome Dove wonderfulness. When I walked into the library, all I wanted was a good story. I had read and liked Johnny's first book "Dove Season" and liked it so I figured "what the heck" Boy, am I glad I picked this book. What a great story. less
