review 1: Not as chilling as Aycliffe’s earlier works. Seemed to become fairly entangled in itself very early on with straggling plotlines which unfortunately defected from the nature of the tale. If you’re new to Aycliffe, I’d recommend ‘Naomi’s Room’ which is actually terrifying – this is a bit of a perambulation along a dark corridor with no real sense of purpose. Still, well written and painstakingly researched as is his wont. Worth a spooky Autumn read, though.
review 2: Didn't get it. I was expecting more. Good idea that lost it's way . I haven't read any other books by this author so maybe this is just the style to expect. Too many unexplained and underdeveloped themes / things for me SPOILERS : why a deaf 10 yo would be sent to look after her 24
... moreyo injured brother , blitz or no blitz. Why such a big age difference? Why the Portuguese connection? Why do all the ancestors hate each other so much? I found it slow going with wooden characters reflective of their Lake District Settings . How anyone writing a diary could include such detailed dialogue and why the diary writer's parents were so horrible to him weren't really clear. SPOILER : best bit is the one and only sex scene when nursey's skin turns all scaly, her eyes go red and she ends up on the floor. less

Slightly disappointing in that it wasn't as "scary" as I expected. Otherwise a good tale.

Loved these book. Good old-fashioned ghost story and thoroughly enjoyable.
