review 1: The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving is a novel that took me by surprise in all the right ways. Maybe because I’ve been where Ben, our well intended but chronically irresponsible hero, finds himself again and again. The other hero of the story is Trevor, who Ben finds himself care taking. Trevor is an incredible example of humanity and how there is no way on our plane of existence that we can make sense of why one person comes up with a bum hand health wise while others gets a pass. I adore his mother Elsa and her steadfast dedication to her son. Revealing her nature and her plight in a simple deep breath or a quiet conversation across the lawn with Trevor’s poor shlub of a runaway father, Jonathan Evison is a master at painting scene after scene not only of Ben’s ... morecrumbling life but every character he comes across, helps, disappoints or just observes. This story is simple and funny and ridiculously recognizable to any of us who have found ourselves on the other end of the societal well oiled machine. Most importantly it gives a glimpse of our world, the ones who try and try again to make some tiny mark in someone’s life, some contribution of happiness to an unhappy life, even as we drown in our own stupid choices. This writer clearly knows, we’re not really drowning, we’re just living and life is a sticky, dirty, funny business. Thanks Jonathan for the laughs, the beautiful words and for people like your Benjamin, Trevor, Elsa, Dot and the rest of the crew.
review 2: Don't read. The author plays on your curiosity about what happened to the main character's children - did they fall off a cliff into a ravine? was he responsible in some way? - but ultimately the book is just crude and trashy. I read to about page 80 and decided I disliked this book enough to not finish it. In fact, I disliked it enough to wish I could have thrown it in the garbage but it was a library book, so I couldn't. Just vulgar and gross. Stay away. less

Well written, humorous and great characters but despite that I felt that it was a bit of a plod.
