Showcase Sunday | 02/19/17

Showcase Sunday is a red carpet event (or weekly meme) hosted my Jordan’s Jewels where only the prettiest book covers dare to show their faces, strutting their stuff for the line of paparazzi ready to critique their fashion risks. –learn more here.

Would you send a villain to do a hero’s job? An exciting new twisted fairy tale series from award-winning author Jen Calonita.

Full of regret, Cinderella’s wicked stepmother, Flora, has founded the Fairy Tale Reform School with the mission of turning the wicked and criminally mischievous into upstanding members of Enchantasia.

Impish, sassy 12-year-old Gilly has a history of petty theft and she’s not too sorry about it. When she lifts a hair clip, she gets tossed in reform school-for at least three months. But when she meets fellow students Jax and Kayla, she learns there’s more to this school than its sweet mission. There’s a battle brewing and she starts to wonder: can a villain really change?

If you have read this blog for any amount of time, you know that I L.O.V.E. Jen Calonita. When I heard she was writing a fairy-tale retelling geared towards middle graders I knew I had to have it. Most of her writing is for younger audiences (like her younger ya series, Secrets of My Hollywood Life) but, for some reason, this really made me excited.

It follows A LOT of well-known characters, like Cinderella’s Evil Step-Mother and Ursula, from Disney’s The Little Mermaid and the cover has no shortage of hints as to what other characters Calonita managed to integrate into the plot.

  • We have an apple (could it be the POISONED apple from Sleeping Beauty’s story?)
  • Scissors with a lock of blonde hair (does anyone remember Tangled, another retelling? I don’t know if this represents Rapunzel or not. *Wink Wink*)
  • The skull on top of one of the stacks of books (okay… I don’t know who that could hint at but I’m sure it does, somehow!)
  • The glass slipper (any Cinderella fans out there?)

This cover is full of little hints that I could spend hours trying to decipher but, let’s be honest, they probably don’t mean anything.

Unless they do.

*Magical glitter falls from the sky.*
