review 1: Inspiring and fascinating, but i am giving it only three stars because of the depiction af the way Pineapple's father's green card is "not renewed". As someone who works with immigration on a daily basis, this is simply not possible legally. There must be a lot more to the story and the fact that the author immediately goes to condemning the USG while either failing to investigate what really happened or choosing not to share the whole story undermines his credibility.
review 2: I had read Savage Inequalities when I was in undergrad or maybe when I started teaching. It was interesting and in many cases heartening to read this book. The stories of the lives of the children and their families touch my heart. I know too often we tend to look the other way or dis... moremiss children in poverty as "someone else' problem". Books like this remind me of why I am still an educator and how even the small things that I might do to help others may spread much like the ripples in a pond from a stone toss. less
