review 1: Wonderful book describing the influence and importance of the Islamic Renaissance at the time of the Abbasids. How classical Greek and Roman knowledge was translated, saved and altered by the scholars of the Islamic empire. Without this repository of knowledge the development of western civilizations would have been drastically altered or delayed. A must read for anyone interested in intellectual history.
review 2: Having read similar books about the contributions of Arab/Islamic civilization, I have to say that this is a worthy addition not only for the passion of the writer but through his attempts to actually chart the touch points in history where the transfer of knowledge and wisdom occurred whether through England, Spain or Italy. This contrasts with
... moreother more general accounts that have elaborated the contributions without actively addressing the mechanics for this transfer of knowledge. less

The remarkable story of how Arab scholars made advances in science & philosophy before Europeans.

Excellent - shame it doesn't say much about the intellectual downfall of the Arabs though.
