review 1: "Yeah. That is a good one. I think it is fun." Mama was worried that the illustrations might be too scary. But, I LOVED the story. After reading this book I wanted to learn more about pirates. I wanted to know if they were real and if they were around today. It made for some fun dinner conversations. I decided that I don't want to pirate, because they don't know when to stop getting gold and treasure.
review 2: Jonny Duddle's last book 'The pirate's next door' was a delight to read. I was so pleased to discover that he had written something new for us to enjoy with the children. This book is more advanced than his last but is every inch as wonderful. Jonny's illustrations are detailed in the way that an intriguing cartoon strip is. The story is written in rhyme,
... more using the colloquial language of pirates-guaranteed to get children interested. The version I bought also comes with a book and audio cd which I plan to play in class tomorrow. It is always nice to introduce a new aspect to shared reading in school. The story tells the tales of a gang of pirates who hear word of some treasure at sea. They become so riled with thoughts of gold that they care not about the vicious monster who is guarding it. Off they set, in their boat, ready to seek their fortune. The pirates think they have been lucky and snaffled the treasure... not quite so lucky when they realise that what they thought was an island-is in fact the monster himself!!! So we learn a tale of greed and misfortune!I am going to use this book tomorrow as we have been discussing maps in class and they are mentioned a couple of times. I can think of many activities to do as a result of this relating to geography (maps), maths (measures of the map) and citizenship (greed). Above all this book is great fun and will encourage children to want to share books. I would reccommend this book highly. less
