review 1: Duddle, J. (2011). The pirates next door. Somerville, MA: Templar Books. The story is about a little girl that lived in a town that was boring and she hoped that a family with children would move in next door so that she would have someone to play with. A family did move in, but it was a family of pirates! They came ashore because their boat needed to be fixed. The book used lots of rhyming in the story, and made it very entertaining to read. All the adults in the neighborhood do not approve of the pirates. Through out the story they complain. Finally they got their shipped fixed and ti was time to leave. Every time they come to a new town, they leave gifts for everyone in the town, so that they will realize they are not bad people. On every lawn there was an "X" and bur... moreried underneath each one was treasure. I liked this story a lot. I rate it 5/5.
review 2: Great illustrations, funny story.Matilda has always wished for a child to move into the house next door. She gets her wish when a family of pirates move in with their son. The pirates soon cause mayhem on land as they try to continue sea life among the boring seaside town of Dull-on-Sea.I used this in a mixed ability literacy class over a week leading up to a big write. A wealth of characters and an adaptable story line make it a good book to use for children to rewrite aspects, e.g. change characters, change the ending, etc. less
