review 1: My kids (aged 6 and 7) really liked this book, and I thought it was okay. The rating is the average of our reactions. The good thing is that the main character is a girl acting in ways that are rarely depicted in children's books (or anywhere). She is brave, and not only brave, but reckless, physically strong, impulsive, high energy, and well, kind of obnoxious. I found it super, super interesting that my kids (girls) kept forgetting that she was a girl. They just couldn't wrap their brains around the fact that she was a girl, given how she looked and acted. That alone made the book worth it. There are some other kind of queer elements I enjoyed - the relationship between the kids' father and another man, the fact that the brother was into cooking in a pretty genderquee... morer way. That said - the story wasn't very compelling. So - A+ with gender in this one, but I wish it could have that AND be a little more interesting storywise.
review 2: This graphic novel is the story of three friends, Claudette, Marie and Gaston. They live in the town ofMont Petit Pierre, a fortress to protect the inhabitants fromthe giant. Claudette and Gaston's fath3er was the blacksmith and lost his arm and two legs battling the dragon Azra. Claudette convinced his friends to go to kill the giant that lives on the Giant's Peak. When the villagers notice the three are missing, they get farmers to volunteer to go bring the kids back. However,Claudette's father and the blacksmith have already left to save them In the end, after many adventures threatening their lives, the three children find that the giant is a baby giant and they quickly became friends. The children put on a shadow show for the villagers and convinced them the giant was killed and the village was safe. less
