review 1: É difícil não gostar da escrita de JRS. Adoro a forma como escreve.Mas relativamente a este obra, sinto uma certa dificuldade em ter uma opinião concreta. Houve alturas em que estava farta do livro e outras em que me apetecia continuar a ler página após página.E muito embora o estilo e a obra sejam diferentes, houve momentos em que pensei, estou a ler uma obra estilo "Viagens da Minha Terra". O romance de Afonso e Agnès tem muitas semelhanças com o romance de Carlos e Joaninha, na forma como a narrativa é desenvolvida e como se torna um elemento secundário na obra.O livro faz uma descrição muito exaustiva e muito particular da participação portuguesa na 1ª Guerra Mundial.
review 2: My mother's grandfather served in the Portuguese Expeditionary C... moreorps, during World War I. However this was the first time I had contact with the daily struggling experienced by him and all the Portuguese troops, in order to survive the hardships of war. Actually my grand-grandfather died in the same circumstances as Matias, after the end of the war. I respect more than ever all the soldiers who died, got injured or suffered at other guy's war and were abandoned and forgotten by their country, like these guys were.Regarding the end of the novel, how the hell does Afonso accept Agnés death report and does not go by himself to say the last goodbye at her grave? I am tired of reading books without happy endings... how could Agnés die? I think I was in love with her.I will give 4 stars for the tribute given by the author to the Portuguese soldiers. less
