review 1: A pleasant change from the usual maritime exploits of Joseph Conrad. The plot follows a young French army officer who is constantly challenged to duels for most of his life by another French officer who perceives that his honour has been compromised. Conrad sets out a clear picture of an officer's life in the army during the Napoleonic era. Kept my interest throughout the novel wondering what would happen next.
review 2: This was the fifth and final installment in the Melville House collection of volumes that all bear the same title: THE DUEL. The Casanova and Kuprin were the least satisfying, but still enjoyable. The Chekhov, Kleist, and Conrad were remarkable, and I am a little surprised that this volume, by Conrad isn't well known (or maybe I'm the only one ... morewho had not come across it before). The other great thing about these books is the collection of collateral duel-related fiction and non-fiction which you can download from the MHP website. less
