review 1: Fascinating, I picked this book up because of the Irish author (Sinead O'Connor's brother) and my interest in Irish culture. The characters Allgood, Synge & Yeats are based on actual people involved with Irish theater in the early 1900's. This book is written using 'flashbacks' - which I usually deplore - and the beginning of the book is actually the end of Allgood's life, and I almost put it away then unfinished. Persisted, and next I was totally enthralled - the description of both Allgood's early life, a well as descriptions of Synge's mother & situation, had me 'rolling in the aisles'. Of particular note, Molly's descriptions of her sexual escapades with all of her 3 'beaus' (sounds like 3 was her lifetime total). Wonderful.I enjoyed the book more and more, and pa... morerticularly the descriptions of Yeats. A lovely read.
review 2: Joseph O’Connor’s The Star of the Sea was my favourite novel of the year in past years so I began this audio book with high hopes. It is hard to say why a book doesn’t work but Molly’s monologue soon began to bore and annoy me. To give an idea of the pace, the first disc was largely taken up with a description of Molly’s room and its contents. On one level the audio version is read extremely well, Molly having a lively Dublin accent and Synge a deadpan, almost autistic sounding posh English accent. Yet the relationship seemed unbelievable and I’m sorry to say I just couldn’t be bothered continuing to listen to Molly’s actressy outpourings. less
