review 1: I really loved this murder mystery. Swift is a college professor, son of two famous poets, and a poet himself. He lives in a deconsecrated church surrounded by interesting art and has what he views as a no-strings relationship with the local police chief Max. One of his students,Tad, turns up outside his office, beaten and bloody, ready to run. Swift offers him keys to his cottage on a nearby island, and later learns Tad's father has been murdered. The setting is wonderful, located in the fictional village of Stone Coast along the southern coast of Maine near Portland. It seems to take its name from the local MFA program, a clever use, given Swift's background and profession, but also reminds me strongly of Stonington, a bit further along the coast in Penobscot Bay. The ins... moreular politics of a university are present, as are the small town networks. Swift is fascinating, with a painful past that haunts his present. Max is a bit of an enigma, seeing him as we do through Swift's myopic gaze, but gradually is revealed to have his own appeal. The story arc surrounding Tad and his father's death is an interesting mystery, with the killer not immediately apparent. Swift's involvement and the way it all unfolds held me spellbound, and I pretty much read the book in one sitting, something unusual for me. Great storytelling with marvelous characters.
review 2: I'm really fond of Josh Lanyon, first because he's a good writer, but also because his work is less formulaic than most m/m romance. Come Unto These Yellow Sands is, somehow, the most engaging of the many Lanyon novels I've read. The protagonist has a remarkably complex, interesting background. The man he wants is as opaque as he is transparent to the reader, and by the time the inevitable happened, I actually gasped in surprise. The usual wacky mystery, not much sex but plenty of heat. There's some questionable logic early on, but don't let that put you off. It's an excellent read. less
