review 1: Though incredibly thoroughly researched and meticulously detailed - and incredibly helpful for the purposes of which I bought it - it's a bit of a slog to get through, particularly the sections where Flanders feels the need to labourously describe the plot of some penny-dreadful or piece of stagecraft that is utterly banal in its melodrama (although this is, of course, the point). Nonetheless a worthwhile if somewhat belaboured read.
review 2: Another case of an excellent and interesting idea not thoroughly executed. The author frequently rambles off subject and returns without warning several pages later. And for a book this size I expected there would be more in-depth discussion of the development of crime as celebrity. This book reads more like a very long b
