review 1: In this oddly charming little book, Schalansky's whimsical, thoughtful prose holds hands with poetry. She captures the beauty of the most desolate islands and something of their history, often through the tale of what the humans did there. Some of the islands have an awful history; Schalansky recounts the French testing of the hydrogen bomb and Clipperworth Atoll's history of rape and murder. But there are beautiful histories too, ones of man learning from the island. Gissler, I think, will stay with me.Each island receives the same treatment; a double-page spread of text following a factual double-page of island, its country and a map. But although I wanted some of the textual passages to be longer, the prevailing sense was one of intrigue. What more is there to these... more islands? Remembering a childhood dream of lone exploration in far-flung wildernesses, I now find myself wanting to discover for myself.
review 2: A rich book, beautiful and full of discovery. Are you curious ? you like to discover things on topics that you would not have thought ? you love beautiful books ? those who carry you away? you are an explorer in you? If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, this book is for you. Fifty island are presented here. On the right, the island is mapped, gray / orange lost amidst all this beautiful blue. On the left is a series of information: resituation on the globe, the nearest land, chronological frieze, people, language ... But there are mainly: the story. Real or imaginary, it is the story that transports us to another place, lost, forgotten, mysterious, dangerous, in another time, gone, resonant legendary. less
