review 1: Chicken said Cluck was a cute story about a chicken that was only trying to help tend to the pumpkin patch, but Paul and Earl only thought that chicken was only getting in the way. Until one day they realizes something good does come out of the chicken being in the garden. I thought this was a great story for beginer readers. It wasnt a very hard story to follow and it had words that came up time and time again in the story so it allowes children to pick up and reconize words that may not have known they first time.
review 2: Chicken said, “Cluck!” By Judyann Grant pictures by Sue Truesdell (Harper Collins Publisher, 2008) 32p. Controlled Vocabulary. Summary: This story is about a boy Earl, and a girl Pearl, who plant pumpkins. The chicken wants to help b
... moreut neither the boy nor girl will let the chicken. In the end it is the chicken that saves the day. Critique:a. This is a good book for beginner readers. It has a plot that is easy to follow and also repeats words to help children learn the recognition of these words. It also teaches children the concept of steps to do something, as in the simple version of how to plant a pumpkin. Pumpkins don’t just appear there is work to do in order to get a pumpkin. b. The boy and the girls name are similar with only one letter off so it will be easy for children to figure out the names of the children in the book. The girls name is Pearl, the boys name is Earl. It is good that the words repeated throughout the book so that the children could become familiar with them. Having repeated words and rhyming words is helpful for beginning readers. c. An example of lines that rhyme is on page 11 “Earl watered the seeds. Pearl pulled the weeds.” Words that are repeated throughout the book are “‘Shoo! Shoo! Cluck! Cluck! Cluck!” said Chicken.’” These are just a few examples shown in the book. Curriculum Connection: This is a good book for younger children who are just beginning to read. This book can also teach children the steps to do something, for example, first you do this, second you do this, next you do this, etc. I could have pictures and sentences of what happened in the book and the children would have to put them in the correct order. For example, if the children saw a picture of a pumpkin they should know that doesn’t go at the beginning. less
