review 1: I am glad I did not read previous reviews for this book. I loved it. I just knew somebody was going to die, but I could not figure out which character. The tropical isle setting is so enticing. I would love to leave my life behind and find a an uncluttered beach life. The allure of the diving school, albeit with a sinister element of undersea danger, puts me on edge. My sensors are tingling as the mismatched German couple arrives for lessons. The almost has-been soap star and the writer whose muse has left him, publicly abuse each other and set up the dive instructor. He is such a sap for her beauty and sexual overtones. I really thought one of them would kill him. The person with the most undetected secret when it all plays out, however, is the instructor's gir... morelfriend. I was cheering, good for her! The author gives us suspense, intrigue, dishonesty, mental unbalance, graphic sex, and an unexpected ending. That's enough for a good read for me. I can see this brought to the screen too. The visual component is strong. I highly recommend this read. My thanks to Goodreads and the author for a complimentary copy.
review 2: A pretty quick read. The book is essentially like a short, dark movie, where 2 diving students meet their dive instructor, the students have an incredibly messed-up relationship (involving abuse, mental, physical, sexual) and their damaged psyches spill out into the life of the dive instructor. We've all seen such a movie, it's just not often that you see something very similar written in a book/novel form. It's an interesting story. But it can get annoying to have characters that are not more intelligent (i.e. Sven, the dive instructor), more humane (Theo, one of the dive students, also an author and the significant other to the other diver, Jola) and less willing to be constantly abused (Jola, a stunning actress, here to learn diving for the role of a lifetime). The other day, on facebook, I saw a photo that said, "It's not my circus, not my dancing monkeys." The point being... if you see a mess, and it's not your mess, walk away, it's not worth it. And that was kind of my feeling reading this book. The 2 dive students, Theo and Jola, are SO messed up, they're like a black hole and any sane person would run from them, recognizing the black hole. And, sorry, but to use another example... it's that whole "lay down with pigs and you get dirty." You get into the heads of Theo and Jola and, yes, you get dirty. Really, disgustingly dirty. So it's an interesting, dark story, but a dirty one, not for everyone. less

Something was lost in translation. Characters have no redeeming factors.
