review 1: Tony Webster is in late middle age as he tells the story of his best childhood friends and his first real girlfriend and the tragic end that one of them met. Years later he is bequeathed the diary of his friend which makes him analyze the death, its causes, and his part in it. This book is short, just a little over 4 hours long in audio. Richard Morant does a fine job with the narration, and I did find myself driving a little slower, so I could find out more about the solution to the mystery. Much of the book was Tony looking back over his rather mundane life and dealing with the consequence of never really living. When the end came and I knew what happened, I was surprised, but it wasn't an intake-of-breath kind of surprise. Milder than that. I wanted more, but it did mak... moree me want to go back and listen to parts again now that I knew the truth.
review 2: The Sense of an Ending / Julian Barnes. Only 163 pages (novella?), but provocative and memorable. (Man Booker prizewinner) Tony Webster, London retiree, relates an account of his affairs and marriage. In particular, he recalls and ponders the history of his relationship with college girlfriend Veronica. Veronica’s life is also entwined with Adrian’s, a mutual friend; she re-enters Tony’s world forty some years later. This book is a fine, balanced portrait of an “ordinary” introspective man and his most extraordinary experience. I confess Veronica annoyed me a good deal, but that feeling did not lessen the power of the story. less

This slight novel packs a mighty powerful punch. All I could say when I was finished was, "Wow".
