review 1: I thought this had potential, but it didn't work out. It was very rambly and many of the plotlines seemed to go nowhere or just not seem very believable, like the predatory teacher. I never bought Rachel's supposed attraction to him and she didn't seem to either, so nothing about that worked. Rachel's relationship with her brother got a bit creepy as well, and overall the book was just so depressing and endless it didn't work for me.
review 2: I liked how this book was set up during the war. It wasn't a book about a war romance like you so often find, it was more along the lines of a family during the war and what exactly happens to them while a loved away is away fighting.
