review 1: Mariah Hunter is a thief and an adventurer, but she gets more than she bargains for when she steals a fire opal out from under her old partner and lover’s nose. Ben tries to warn her, but she flees the scene and soon finds herself being hunted by one man and travelling with another who popped into her hotel room out of thin air.It has been years since I read the first two books in the Phantom series so when I originally started this book I had to stop and go back and reread the first two to refresh my memory. I am glad I did because it gave me a chance to rekindle my attachment to a lot of the characters. This third book is definitely my favorite. I love Mariah’s spirit and her tough outer shell. I loved reading about her and Rafe and watching him page by page melt ... moreher icy heart. The heat between the two is incredible and their lead up to happily ever after realistic and exciting. They both have a past with baggage that adds to paths they select when dealing with each other, emotionally, it gave the story depth and added a layer of believability to their relationship. I really enjoy the magic and the glimpses of the old Romani Village, Valoren, that Rafe and his family come from. If you haven’t read the first two books in this series, I strongly suggest you do so. They are all connected and characters appear and reappear in each book. Had I not read them I really feel like I would have felt a little lost or at least like I was missing out while reading this one. Some things were left up in the air at the end of this book, and I find myself wishing I had a book four in my hands. I don’t feel like I have all the closure I need to have with some of the other characters like Ben and Cat, Gemma and Paxton and finally Rogan and Sarina. I would love for another book in this series, and the sooner the better - tomorrow would be great! review 2: The third installment of Julie Leto’s Phantom series, Kiss of the Phantom, is my favorite. All of her books contain a female lead that is very strong and self-sufficient, but has vulnerability as well. I found that I connected with the Mariah Hunter character the best of all the leads thus far in the series.Mariah is a self-proclaimed thief, a paid treasure hunter, in the adventurous style of Indiana Jones. Whether it’s by flying her own plane or helicopter, trekking through the densest jungles with her machete, or a combination thereof, she travels the world taking valuable artifacts from various entities, giving them to others who pay her well for this service. Kiss of the Phantom begins with the loss of some Aztec coins she acquired for a not so nice client, as well as Mariah chasing after an artifact simply because her old partner and ex-boyfriend Ben was after it. Mariah quickly finds out that the artifact is not a simple one. It has magic attached to it, in the vein of a “phantom” named Rafe, who was trapped in an artifact a couple hundred years ago like his brothers in the previous books of the series. Adventure and danger ensue, as Rafe learns about his new world, they try to get the coins back, and Mariah learns how to let a man in to her heart after all.I really enjoyed this book the best out of the Phantom series. There was nonstop action and a lot going on, but I never got lost or confused. Ms. Leto’s wonderful writing kept me entertained as well as completely engrossed. I can’t wait until the next installment! less
