review 1: I was reading this novel as a consideration on Vermont's Children's Book Award List, which is curated for students in grades 4-8. And as much as I enjoyed this book, in the end, I think it is just too young for them. This book is a delight and has lingered with me after reading it, but it would be perfectly suited for readers 2-4 grade, readers who are beginning to earn their wings as independent readers. Sweet illustrations within the story add to its fun. This is the second book in a budding new series, but works as a stand-alone. That said, I am ordering both of them for my school library and look forward to more books in the series.
review 2: As a librarian I'm often on the look out for easy transitional chapter books that have lots of kid appeal. This
... moreis a great example. Elanor's grandmother is paying for her to go to summer camp. Truth be told, Eleanor's not so sure it's a good idea. The author manages to capture perfectly the ambivalence of a child who wants to stretch horizons, but hates change. The truth is, Eleanor doesn't need to love camp. She does, however, need to survive it. In being truthful about her own feelings she finds that it wasn't such a bad experience after all. Short chapters, words scattered loosely about the page, rather than packed into scary tight paragraphs, and occasional black and white illustrations combine to make this a good choice. This would probably be perfect for girls who are not quite ready for Russell's Dork Diary series. less
