review 1: I will admit - this book certainly conjures images of pre-WWII England. However, the beauty ends there. I really wanted to like May, Julian and Evangeline - I didn't. I often felt that their stories didn't intertwine properly. Often Nicolson would start a thought and then trail off into a different direction - making me scratch my head. A disappointment of a read. Probably more of a 2.5 out of 5 - however, I will give her added points for breathing life into the era. I felt that she tried too hard - almost writing more of a screenplay - giving the director huge amounts of details for set direction.
review 2: I didn't give it one star (even though I was close) only because I didn't hate it. I disliked it. But, I didn't hate it. We read it for book club. I had a
... morereally hard time getting into it and I finally just forced myself to read. When I had to put it down, I did not miss it and life would have been perfectly fine if I never picked it back up again. I was the only person in my group that actually finished the book in time and I really couldn't give anyone a good reason why they should bother finishing it . It was just bland. less

Pretty good book. Love the time period and the different characters that we met through the book.

I enjoyed the novel and I hope she continues to write more. Her characters were interesting.

Not terrible, but not the best. Just an "okay" historic fiction novel.

Put this down about halfway through. Just couldn't connect.
