review 1: Absolutely amazing! What a talented writer to be able to take characters and make them real on the pages of this book. Knowing something of bipolar and other mental illnesses that are similar, I was able to connect with both the husband and wife, and the extended family. The things that happened, the decisions that were made, the love that was the consistent thread through all of it, was absolutely, thoroughly enjoyable. I could feel the love between the characters, the bond of the sisters, sisters to parents, spouse to spouse, in-laws, and neighbors and friends. Love really does make things better. And the trust and caring that was described and poured into these pages was palpable. Very, very well done.
review 2: This book is maddeningly depressing --
... morehad trouble reading it and skimmed most of it. Had to read it for book club, but otherwise I would have put it down. Lucy has breast cancer and Mickey is bi-polar. Detailed descriptions of doctors' visits and psychosis. Not an upbeat story, at all. They promised each other they wouldn't have children, but then she gets pregnant through the magic of a failed tubal ligation. Dealing with cancer and surgeries and babies -- makes for a not-great summer read. I would not recommend this book unless you feel like being depressed. Sad sad story. less
