Execution Underground
review 1: Review courtesy of Dark Faerie Tales.Quick & Dirty: A werewolf hunter who is half werewolf himself must team up with the packmaster of the local werewolf pack to help catch a killer. This should go well…Opening Sentence: Jace McCannnon palmed the Mateba and clicked back the gun’s hammer. The Review:I was wildly torn on what kind of rating to give this book. There are occasional hints of what could be a good book/series here. For the most part though, everything fell a little flat. There’s a madman on the loose, killing and raping (in that order, ick) women. Our hero, Jace McCannon, believes it’s the work of a werewolf. As part of the Execution Underground – an organization dedicated to killing supernatural creatures – it’s Jace’s duty to find this monster and... more kill him. While on the scene of the latest murder, Jace runs across Frankie, the packmaster of the local werewolf pack. Sparks fly, both in anger and lust. Will they be able to set aside their differences and work together to find this killer before he strikes again?I really wanted to like Frankie. When I read the description for the book and saw she was packmaster of her pack, I was really excited. You don’t see a whole lot of female packmasters in paranormal romance novels. I was expecting Frankie to be really tough, someone who wouldn’t take crap from anyone. Instead, she seemed, not necessarily meek, but not strong either. She constantly repeated “I’m packmaster,” almost as if she was trying to convince herself as well as her pack members. Not quite what I was picturing at all. Then there’s Jace. Again, I thought I would love him because I’m a sucker for a tortured hero. Seeing as how Jace is a half-werewolf, abused by his werewolf father and now working for an anti-supernatural organization, he would appear to fit the bill perfectly; however, I just couldn’t warm up to him. He seems to constantly be angry, whether it be at his boss, coworkers, or Frankie. He made it very hard for me to like him.The flow of the story itself seemed very disjointed. I don’t generally have an issue with multiple points of view, but in this case, it really worked against the flow of the story. Everything felt really choppy. As far as the romance goes, that also had issues. I’m ok with a misunderstanding here and there, but there were constant misunderstandings between Jace and Frankie. It seemed like every few chapters, one of them misunderstood something the other one said/did, thus stalling their romance, and it just started to become very annoying.Reading through this review, it looks as though I didn’t enjoy this book at all, but there were actually things I liked. The secondary characters seemed to have more life than the main characters. I especially liked David and and found myself looking forward to parts that featured him. I would also love to see more of Shane, as I’m also a sucker for a geeky guy.All in all, this was a rough first book in a series for me. While there were parts I liked, I was mainly disappointed. I did notice that book 2 features one of my favorite secondary characters though, so I will likely give that book a chance before giving up on the series.Notable Scene:“How can you hunt your own kind?” A pang of sadness hit her in the chest. A part of her felt sorry for him because she was challenging all his preconceived notions about himself.“I’m not one of you.”Tears welled in her eyes, and she bit her lower lip. This wasn’t happening. “You are.”He spun to face her, his face flushed and his hands clenched into fists. “I am nothing like him!” he roared.Frankie jerked against the headboard as his eyes flashed wolf-gold again. A young, untamed and angered wolf, even a half-breed, was impossible to control, and she didn’t even have hands to fight with.FTC Advisory: Harlequin Books provided me with a copy of Twilight Hunter. No goody bags, sponsorships, “material connections,” or bribes were exchanged for my review.
review 2: 2.5Twilight Hunter has a interesting world, even if not much in it is fresh or new. If you want to be positive you can say that, even if the world-building is very light, this same "lack" avoided the info-dumps or the lull that the first books in a new series usually suffer from. I loved the first half, but I was growing more and more bored with the second. There are so many time that the misunderstanding trope can be used before it became stale. Here it was used every few chapters, creating a very jerky stop-and-go. And it made anything less believable. You can't cry foul if you haven't given your characters time to actually know one another and trust.I liked both the hero and the heroine, as I love angsty characters and strong women. Unfortunately all the remaining characters were barely sketched, so we got the "asshole" boss, the jerk ex fiancé and the twirling moustache villain rather than full people. At the end I was pretty bored by the cardboard villain, the usual psychopathic serial killer of so many RS, that I was really keen for the book to end. Soon. With a better world-building and more focus on the characters I may have read the second book. As it is, I doubt I'll do. less
