review 1: My written review is for the entire series, not just for this volume. My star ratings are based on the individual installments. The story begins in your standard shōjo smut fashion--the most popular guy teases and torments the most plain girl in the class, playing the part of tough guy until he predictably falls in love with her. His tendency to force himself upon her was mildly amusing to me. The twosome's bickering, flirting, and kissing is actually pretty entertaining. I really enjoyed the chemistry and the progression of the girl's realization for her feelings for Mr. Bad Boy. Pretty standard elements for this type of genre, but it's done well. One of the issues that I had with this series, as stated by a previous reviewer, is how whiney the girl becomes in later chapt... moreers. I kept reading because it didn't bother me enough to stop reading the series. I actually like the way she kind of grows from the experience. Whenever she does realize that she makes a mistake, she apologizes and gains insight from the whole situation. Her naivety in regards to other people's affections for her can be mildly agitating, but in a sense it's also realistic. It's easy for someone who has insecurities and doubts about herself, similar to the protagonist, to miss another person's romantic interest in them. The sex in the series is good and can be steamy, but it's nothing wholly fantastic or unique. Like I stated earlier, the couple has really great chemistry and it shows in their physical actions nicely. My biggest issue with this series was the lack of conflict in their relationship. Yes, there are scenarios where they are tested, but overall it barely scratches their feelings for one another. I would have liked to see them argue and maybe see some sort of emotional fall out stem from it. I think it would have given more depth to their relationship, making it feel like they were growing as a couple. It was just too easy for them to stay so tight-knit.Kyou, Koi wo Hajimemasu is a good romance series. It's enjoyable and has a decent amount of fluff and smut. The plot is interesting, but it's very standard and not special in any sense. I will say that I wouldn't be opposed to re-reading it again if I so happened to come across it again. My overall rating for the series is 3.5 out of 5.
review 2: Stumbled across it on MangaFox. I don't know if I've ever seen a translated edition of this. It's a cute series. It opens with Tsubaki, an old-fashioned girl starting her first day of high school. Unfortunately for her, one of her first acts is to make an enemy of the most popular boy in school. The series follows the pair over the next four years of school through the ups and downs of their relationship. It's a cute series. The art is somewhat similar to that of fruits basket. (And probably half the other manga out there, really.) Kyota is kind of a jerk at first (okay, a total jerk), but as he falls for Tsubaki he becomes a lot more likeable. They make a really cute couple by the end of the series. less
