review 1: More stars please, this book deserves at least 10.There are so many important messages in this simple story for our little people to take in(and for the adults reading the story!) I'm not sure where to start.Love is the answer, that's a great start.Mr. Prickles is difficult to get close to but attempting to make friends with three mean, unkind, excluding animals in the woods only leads Mr. Prickles down of the path of anger and feeling more prickly, on the inside. As he watches his 'friends' from a distance, he discovers Miss Pointypants in the stump next to him. The two porcupines become friends and decide they will have some fun as well, leaving their stumps and going for a stroll. A sweet love story begins and when they return to find the mean group making fun of them,... more they simply don't care anymore.Love has restored Mr. Prickles and he doesn't feel so prickly anymore, on the inside and loves spending time with Miss Pointypants and hugging often, carefully. This story can be used to help children see that if there is a group they are trying really hard to make friends with but are only treated with unkindness then perhaps they could look to the metaphorical stump next to them for someone in line with who they are, not necessarily romantically. This story can also be used to help children identify their feelings during situations of exclusion and being made fun of. Teaching children how to relate to their own inner knowing of how one should be treated and in turn, how to treat others considering how actions and words can make others feel. Kara LaReau has created a rich story with many valuable teachings that can be drawn on time and time again. Scott Magoon has created a visual story that could tell the tale on it's own through incredible use of colour and facial expressions.I highly recommend owning this book.
review 2: This is definitely one of the best and funniest books that I've read in awhile. Mr. Prickles is a porcupine who may be prickly on the outside but he is definitely not prickly on the inside, at least until the other woodland animals make him so. Mr. Prickles becomes quite prickly and instead of befriending the cruel creatures, he instead enjoys glaring at them with prickly regard. Yes, it is that pun-y. I can see how some readers may not enjoy the puns but I found it very entertaining. less
