review 1: After about the first 50 pages, I was going to put this book down, and no longer read it, because it just did not pull me in immediately. When I finally decided that this book at some point had to get better and continued reading I feel in love. I'm not a big reader, so really this book was a good step in the right direction. It's about a girl named Jennifer Day, whose older sister Beth, eventually dies towards the end of the book; no I didn't just ruin it, the whole book they tell you that she dies at the end, at first I didn't like how they told you the entire book that Beth died. But, as I started to understand the book more and more I realized that 10 year old Jennifer was sifting through the lies and truths of Beth's sudden death, which eventually brings up more quest... moreions, and miracles, and even more mysteries. But, the book is mostly about Jennifer trying to grow up quickly, as her family is starting to fall apart. My opinion of this book is actually a good one (with me not being a good reader, I found this more of an accomplishment than anything), but the author's style wasn't really my thing, like I said the first 50 pages, I was very lost and very confused about what was going on, but even though the author's style wasn't really the kind of books I'm used to reading, the pacing of the book, and the descriptiveness, were the parts of the book I appreciated the most. At points I could actually picture what the author was trying to show, and could relate it back to my own life in certain ways. Now, recommendation wise, I think that the person I would recommend to read this book would be someone who likes a story that is descriptive enough to give you an image in your mind of what is going on, and someone who can relate to having family problems, or a child/sibling die, because I truly believe they would understand the book more than someone else who was reading it, and enjoy/appreciate the book more.
review 2: I absolutely loved how Foxlee wove through time. The story jumped from the present to the past, and each one was hardly ever in linear order. But she still made it easy for the reader to follow the jumps and understand the story. What I did not love was how the story was from an older voice. It was not 10 or 11 year old Jenny telling the story. It was Jenny probably in her 20s. That seeped into the story; both her and Danielle sounded much older, though I knew they couldn't be more than 13 (b/c Beth was the oldest, and that's how old she was). In addition, this story didn't break my heart. It made me sick at heart. Or, just sick. I didn't understand how no one could see that Beth needed help. I just felt sick for this family, and not in a way that I enjoy. The story certainly had it's moments, but it just didn't all gel together for me. less
